PHNOM PENH: The new Turkish Ambassador to Cambodia, Ulku Kocaefe, has said that in order to fulfill the agreement that Cambodia and Turkey signed in the past, the Turkish Embassy will establish a trade office in Cambodia.

In a meeting with the Prime Minister of Cambodia on Thursday morning, 25 August, Ambassador Kocaefe stated that she is committed to strengthening and expanding relations between Cambodia and Turkey, growing further on the trade agreements that have already agreed.

"The Office of Commerce will be set up to promote bilateral cooperation in both the regional and global frameworks," the assistant to the Prime Minister, Eang Sophalleth, told reporters after the meeting.

Ambassador Kocaefe stressed that Cambodia and Turkey have a lot of potential to work together.

Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed with the Ambassador and welcomed the establishment of a commercial office at the Turkish Embassy.

"We hope that the Office of Commerce will study and understand cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment, which are the foundation of cooperation in other fields," said Eang Sophalleth, quoting the Prime Minister.

Diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Turkey were established in 1947, however, it was not until 2013 that Turkey officially established its embassy in Phnom Penh. After the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia reestablished relations with Turkey in 1994, and in 2022, Cambodia inaugurated its official embassy in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
